3 Career Limiting Moves

Sometimes I have to wonder how people stay employed, or who would hire them in the first place. There are so many common habits that people bring into the workplace that's completely unprofessional. Just because it may be good for them, doesn't mean it's appropriate for the work environment.
Using slang or crude language
Remember, you're at work to do a job. Not be everyone's best friend. It's okay to be a buddy with some of your colleagues, but you may get caught saying something at the wrong time about another colleague or your employer around the water cooler. Avoid putting people down using humor. Using slang shows a lack of consideration and respect, for others a lack of discipline and intelligence. Unfortunately, for many people they judge words on how they're said more than their meaning.
Doing what you say you're going to do.
Saying your going to do something then not doing it shows a lack of initiative. Napoleon Hill once said that one should always give more value than expected. No employer wants someone who they can't rely on or has to micromanage. They've got other things to do. If given a task it means that your purpose is necessary to the larger picture. If you fail to do your part, hard work of others may be jeopardized, do your best to do your part.
Inappropriate clothing
Dress for success because the way you clothe and carry yourself is a reflection of how you view your value. If your clothes look dirty and wrinkled, do you expect them to want to promote you, when you cannot even promote yourself? What you may think is fine may be completely inappropriate in a professional setting. Ensure you're not getting noticed for all the wrong reasons. Common sense will tell you what you should and shouldn't be wearing. Use better judgement and you may find yourself standing in an opportunity for advancement.
Most people don't go to work everyday simply to grind it out. If you've got an ounce of ambition and a desire for promotion you owe it to yourself to be smart about your work habits. You never know who may be watching. When you're not getting that raise you think you deserve, or that promotion you feel you're qualified for, there may be a reason. Don't leave anything to chance, ensure you don't limit your possibilities for the best career moves you can make.
